Peridot is the official birthstone for the month of August as adopted
by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is the
stone for the Zodiac sign of Libra.
Peridot along with other gems, were used in the mythical Breastplate of Aaron described in the Bible (Exodus 28, 15-30). The breastplate was a ceremonial religious garment set with twelve gemstones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel and corresponded with the twelve signs of the zodiac and the twelve months of the year.
In ancient Egypt it was considered a scared stone a: High priests made cups out of large specimens of peridot from which they drank their ceremonial "soma" as it was believed to bring wisdom and enlightenment. Legend says that peridot was one of the favorite gemstones of Cleopatra and that some of the "emeralds" worn by her were actually peridot.
August birthstone was believed to be a stone of springtime by ancients who considered it a gift from mother nature. Native Hawaiians treasured it as the tears of the Goddess-of-Fire, Pele.
In ancient times, it was said that a dream about peridot foretold impending danger. Ancient Greeks called peridot "evening emerald" because its color became a deeper green at night.
